Sudan joined the ranks of oil explorers in August 1999, when the first oil was shipped from its newly contructed 1,610 km pipeline from the southern oil fields to the Red Sea, to a new port built for the oil tankers. A whole was blown in the pipeline a mere three weeks later by the opponents of the totalitarian government, who have declared it a military target
